Seal the bath and shower

• Liquid-applied sealing materialsneed to be applied in at least two layers. The minimum thickness of the dry layer depends on the type of material:
  Polymer dispersions: At least 0.5 mm
  crack-bridging mineral sealing slurry: At least 2.0 mm
  reaction resins: At least 1.0 mm
• Web-shaped sealants must have a sealing-effective layer thickness of at least 0.2 mm. This allows them to ensure the necessary waterproofness.
• Plate-shaped sealants such as wedi Building Boards must be at least 10 mm thick (for W0-I and W1-I) or 25 mm thick (for W2-I), depending on the water exposure class.

• For liquid sealants, the wet and dry layer thickness must be carefully controlled during processing. At least five measurements per 20 m² Area are required to ensure uniform sealing. The measuring points should be documented and properly closed afterwards.
• Membrane and panel-shaped sealants – for example wedi building boards or sealing membranes – facilitate quality control: They are manufactured in the factory at a constant thickness. Nevertheless, joints, impacts and transitions must be carefully sealed to ensure tightness. Careful processing at critical points, such as wall connections and penetrations, is important.

Sealing systems for heavily stressed wet ooms require a building supervisory approval (abP) or a European technical approval (ETA). These certificates confirm that the Products have been extensively tested and qualified. All wedi Products that can be used as Sealing are certified accordingly: They meet the requirements of DIN 18534.

DIN 18534 divides wet rooms into different water impact classes to ensure the correct selection and processing of sealing materials. This classification is based on the intensity and duration of the water exposure to an area. [A&O1]

• W0-I: Low water exposure
  Areas with occasional splashes or short-term moisture, such as guest toilets or wall surfaces, that rarely come into direct contact with water. Here, simpler sealing solutions are sufficient.
• W1-I: Moderate water exposure
  This class applies to normal bathrooms and showers without flush-to-floor drains. Here, the seal must withstand splashing water and water vapor, but it is not exposed to continuous moisture.
• W2-I: High water exposure
  Rooms with intensive and frequent water pollution, e.g. showers with flush-to-floor drains or commercial kitchens, require sealing that permanently keeps moisture out. High-performance membrane or plate-shaped sealants are inserted here.
• W3-I: Very high water exposure
  areas such as swimming pool enclosures or large kitchens with permanent water pollution. These require particularly robust sealing systems that must also withstand chemical stresses. A combination of high-performance membrane and plate-shaped systems is usually used here, supplemented by chemically resistant compounds.

• The substrate must be dry, load-bearing and free of dust, oil, grease or other anti-adhesion substances.
• Primer absorbent substrates to improve adhesion.
• For smooth or non-absorbent substrates, a special adhesive base may be required.
• Make up for any larger unevenness, especially with web-shaped sealants.

• Liquid sealants: Apply in at least two layers. Check the wet layer thickness during processing and ensure that the minimum dry layer thickness is reached.
• Lay it on the prepared surface and allow it to overlap at the joints. Carefully glue the overlap with suitable sealants.
• wedi Buildng panels : Depending on the surface, glue or screw the wedi Building Boards together over the entire surface. Secure impacts and penetrations with sealing tapes and sleeves.

• For liquid sealing, measure the thickness of the wet layer.
• For membrane and plate solutions, check for correct adhesion and fixation.
• Create documentation for demanding projects and for water impact classes W2-I and W3-I.
