Fundo Thermo by wedi: energy recovery directly within the shower system

Heat that would normally be lost down the drain is put to use:  Fundo Thermo by wedi captures heat from outgoing shower water and uses it to preheat incoming cold water.  The all-in-one system combines a shower element with integrated heat recovery – with no electricity, batteries or cables required. Depending on the installation and type of use, up to 50 per cent of the thermal energy can be recovered. And from a design perspective, the shower floor makes an impression too. The result is a shower floor that delivers energy efficiency, practical installation and design appeal.

With energy costs remaining high, every kilowatt hour saved matters. This is where Fundo Thermo comes in. Its factory-integrated heat exchanger enables safe, hygienic heat recovery directly within the shower element, with no contact between outgoing shower water and incoming cold water. Energy is therefore recovered at source: directly in the shower. “For us, Fundo Thermo is an exciting next step: it adds heat recovery to our established floor-level shower system while keeping the installation safe, practical and familiar,” says Vanessa Beer, Product Manager at wedi.

Fundo Thermo is the efficient solution for anyone looking to design and build bathrooms cost-effectively and with the future in mind. "On construction sites, contractors need practical solutions that make it easier to build sustainably – and that have been developed with safe, reliable use in mind," continues Vanessa Beer.

System approach at its core

Fundo Thermo takes wedi’s proven system approach a step further. The heat exchanger is installed at the factory and securely sealed within the shower element, removing the need for a separate component. "The plug-and-play solution is ready to install and just as straightforward to work with as customers expect from wedi systems," says Vanessa Beer. Fewer components mean fewer interfaces – helping to reduce potential risks on site. And because the heat exchanger requires no power connection, no additional electrical work is needed.

Fundo Thermo is designed for projects where sustainability, running costs and standards-compliant construction all need to be considered from the start – from new-build and refurbishment projects to high-use environments such as hotels, care facilities and modular construction. It is particularly effective wherever showers are used regularly and reducing energy loss can make a meaningful difference. Design freedom is retained too: the technology remains invisible after installation, allowing flexible bathroom planning. With its slim 35 mm channel profile, Fundo Thermo sits discreetly within the shower floor and integrates neatly into a wide range of bathroom designs. The result is a floor-level shower system that brings together energy efficiency, practical planning and design flexibility.

Fundo Thermo at a glance

  • The Fundo Thermo complete system consists of a shower element with factory-integrated drainage, a heat exchanger and the matching shower channel.
  • Up to 50 per cent of the thermal energy can be recovered by using heat from outgoing shower water – with no electricity, batteries or cables required. Fresh water and waste water remain completely separate.
  • Fundo Thermo is easy to install, can be tiled directly and is suitable for a range of installation situations. It can also be cut to size on site, down to 900 × 900 mm.
  • The Kiwa-certified system complies with the requirements of EN 1717 and supports projects targeting standards and certification schemes such as Passive House and BREEAM.
  • Maintenance is minimal after installation: only the hair trap requires regular cleaning. The use of a non-corrosive drain cleaner is recommended twice a year.
  • wedi provides a 10-year warranty on the structural waterproofing. The integrated heat exchanger is covered by a 5-year manufacturer's warranty.
